Barbara is very partial to these denizens of the desert; she sculpted her first life-size bronze javelina in 1996 or there abouts, and decided to sculpt the entire family of
javelina soon after. There are four in her javelina family collection now, a male, female and two piglets; one piglet nestled in a box of brightly colored panseys.
Barbara was asked by the Sedona Festival of the Arts & The Sedona Chamber of Commerce to sculpt “Mabel & Oscar,” two life-size javelina without the detail of the coarse bristely hair common to the breed on the bodies, providing a smooth canvas that local Sedona Artists would be able to paint, decorate, and embelish the resin castings made from the original. There are 48 different designs placed all over Sedona and the Sedona Chamber of Commerce provides maps of their locations for visitors to view the superb art work of the local artist community.
Governor Janet Napolitano designated the project as an Arizona Treasure. Napolitano complimented the Sedona Arts Festival and the Sedona Chamber of Commerce on their dedication to promoting the arts in AZ through this project. Many of the sculptures will go back into a Gala Auction event which will be the primary fundraiser for non-profits in the Sedona area.... read more
The first step was the creation of Mabel & Oscar by Barbara in clay and wax;
the next step was to have them produced in resin and the final step was when
the Local Artists of Sedona turned them into individual works of art for the community
and visitors to enjoy. For more information visit www.JavelinasonParade.com
